Hello friends! Today I wanted to talk about homeschooling and why we chose that route for our family. I will say it has been the best decision we have made for our girls!
Why did we choose to homeschool?
Our daughter got diagnosed with Tetrasomy X and autism before starting school, so we never got to experience public school for her. However, my husband and I were raised in public school and we have friends who are parents of special needs kids that are in public school. We have heard the stories about how their kids don’t get one on one attention, how they feel their kids are behind, how their kids get made fun of or bullied, how they’re always getting sick, and the list goes on.
Back in 2022/2023, I felt the Lord telling me it was time to quit my job and focus on being a stay- at-home mom. The truth is I had been feeling that calling for a very long time, I just never listened. I was not a Christian, and I hadn’t gone to church in like 9 years, so I didn’t know it was the Lord speaking to me at the time. But after having our second daughter, things got a little more hectic with juggling appointments, daycare for our oldest, and every day life stuff. I couldn’t handle it anymore, so after much prayer, I decided to listen to the Lord and go through with my calling.
Little did we know that was the best thing we did for our girls. We are now finishing our first year of homeschooling with our kindergartener. The girls don’t get sick as often, they learn life skills, our 6 year old is actually ahead compared to if she were in public school in a special ed class, I give her one-on-one time, and the girls learn at their own pace.
We don’t need to worry about tests, or anxiety, or rushing through subjects. We incorporate the Bible in our learning and we get to socialize with other kids at their co op. And one of the things I love most is that the girls get to learn together, even though they are 3 years apart. My 3 year old is so smart because she gets to listen in and join in our learning! Their sister bond is pretty amazing.
I want to talk about our curriculum and what co ops we are a part of, but I will leave that for another day. I hope that maybe if you are struggling with the decision to homeschool, that I was able to help a little in convincing you to. The truth is the best teacher your child can have is YOU! After all, you, the parent/guardian, have been teaching your children all they know since they were born! You know them better than anyone. 🙂
Until next time !
